Why expanding internationally is the way forward for many businesses

If you are looking to expand your business, the smart money says you should be considering exporting your products or services overseas.

For the third year running, our worldwide survey has found that more business who are engaged in international trade are reporting good results than those who focus solely on their home markets.

Drilling down, among the 19,000 business owners and senior managers we talked to in 96 countries around the world, 55% of internationally trading firms reported that their revenues have grown in the past 12 months, compared with 46% of firms trading mainly in domestic markets. That’s a noticeable differential.

And it’s not just sales that are growing. Over the same time frame, almost half of international traders reported an increase in profits too, compared with just over a third of domestically focussed firms. So trading across boundaries is one very important way forward for many businesses.

And if you are considering expanding abroad, then a physical presence in the countries where you are planning to do business is one possibility you should consider.

Three quarters of firms globally believe that a location close to their customers can boost sales.
And companies who are doing business in emerging markets see even greater benefits in getting close to their customers – especially in China, Brazil and India.

But setting up a physical presence in a new country is not an easy step for any company to take on its own. A significant number of businesses in our survey explained that they would value help and advice in three key areas to help them make the step to international trading. They would appreciate support understanding the regulatory framework in new territories, assistance with the rules governing taxation, and with local customs that could affect the way they do business.
